IT security always comes first when traveling.

This week alone, several IT security incidents were observed while traveling in Germany, once again emphasizing the importance of digital vigilance. While these often involve classic cases – for example, when travelers simply leave their IT equipment unattended – there are also far more severe situations: not only is the IT equipment forgotten, but it is also not locked to prevent unauthorized access. This allows potential attackers to easily access the device, install malware, or steal sensitive data.

Background and Initial Research

Initial research revealed that neither the BSI nor the Verfassungsschutz have published any information regarding these incidents. Therefore, press statements were requested from both authorities to clarify the current status and obtain further details. In contrast, the Austrian A-SIT Zentrum für sichere Informationstechnologie already provides concrete recommendations. Their website offers guidance such as:
– Never leave your device unattended: Do not leave your mobile IT equipment unsupervised to protect it from misuse. – Lock your device: If a device is not in active use, it should be secured with a passcode or biometric methods (such as FaceID or TouchID).

Recommendations for Travelers and Companies

The repeated incidents demonstrate the importance of keeping track of technical devices and implementing the necessary security measures. Therefore, companies and end users should:
– Create awareness: Sensitize yourself and your employees to the risks of unsecured IT equipment.
– Implement technical measures: Use passcodes, biometric verification methods, and other security features to prevent unauthorized access.
– Regular updates and training: Ensure that all technical devices are always up to date and that all involved parties are informed about current security standards.

Outlook

These incidents serve as a clear wake-up call for the IT industry and for travelers alike. Further feedback and results from the requested press statements by the BSI and the Verfassungsschutz will be added in future reports. A special thanks goes to the colleagues at A-SIT for their helpful recommendations and their continuous efforts to advance IT security on an international level.
Stay vigilant and protect your digital data – especially while traveling.
